Pacificat Search Results Get Improved Display

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

The library is pleased to announce the introduction of a new feature to the Pacificat catalog: book cover images and links to book previews at Google Book Search. The addition of these features makes Pacificat a more powerful searching tool and gives library users more information about items in our catalog.

Currently, cover images display for any book in Pacificat which have an ISBN that is included in Google’s ever-expanding database. Some books in Google’s database also have previews available, so you can browse portions of the text right from your web browser to see if the book might be useful to your search.

Additionally, we’ve made accessing ebooks even easier by moving the ebook link right to the search results page. Finally, all items in every search now display their complete title right on the search results page, a minor tweak which yields major dividends when you’re scanning through results.

We hope you enjoy these improvements!

New Dean of the Library Announced

Friday, April 4th, 2008

University of the Pacific announced today that C. Brigid Welch, an assistant university librarian at Santa Clara University, has accepted the post of dean of the University of the Pacific Library. She will start the position June 1.

“There is strong campus agreement that Brigid Welch brings great leadership experience to the deanship,” said Provost Phil Gilbertson. “She will deepen the partnership between the library and the faculty and advance the integration of library services into the curriculum.  She is on the forefront of rapid developments in technology that are changing the work of libraries.”

Welch has published and lectured on many aspects of librarianship including libraries in the age of Google, how libraries can use technology to support effective learning, and the challenges of online catalogs.  Welch is co-editor, with Virginia Steel, of “The Future of Information Services,” published in 1995 by Haworth Press.  She currently serves as an academic library representative on the Executive Board of BayNet, a Bay Area multi-type library association.

Welch comes to Pacific with extensive knowledge and experience in library services. She currently is the assistant university librarian for public services at Santa Clara University. She previously served in similar leadership positions at libraries at Menlo College, Stanford University, George Washington University, the University of California at San Diego, and the University of Houston. She has served as an association executive at the American Library Association’s Association of College and Research Libraries Division  and at the Association of Research Libraries’ Office of Management Services. She holds a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s in English literature from Arizona State University.

“I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Library’s efforts to fulfill its mission of helping students become information literate, lifelong learners,” Welch said. “I know first-hand from the Pacific graduates in my family that Pacific provides an outstanding student-centered learning experience.  I look forward to working with the library’s dedicated staff to develop strong programs and innovative services that are responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and community members in this information age.”
