New Exhibit in Library Celebrates Fifty Years of Time Out

Dave Brubeck’s legendary album Time Out was released 50 years ago in 1959 and went on to become the first jazz album to sell over one million copies.

In recognition of the album’s 50th birthday, the Library has put together an exhibit in the library lobby featuring archival material related to the Time Out and Brubeck’s amazing career.

New Lobby Exhibit of Chinese Christian Center Materials

The Chinese Christian Center began as the Chinese Methodist Episcopal Mission in 1905, and was a supportive part of the Stockton community for several decades. The new library lobby exhibit features photographs, newspaper clippings, and newsletters related to the Center, from the manuscript collection in Holt-Atherton Special Collections.

New Exhibit on Japanese-American Baseball

Throughout most of the U.S. involvement in World War II, Japanese-Americans were forced from their homes on the West Coast and sent to live in government internment camps. Many internees were avid baseball players and organized teams to play against local groups.

In honor of the start of the baseball season, Holt-Atherton Special Collections Department is presenting a new exhibit on baseball in the internment camps. Located in the lobby, the exhibit features camp newspaper clippings and other documents that help to tell the story of baseball in the camps.

New Digital Brubeck Collection

In conjunction with the 2008 Brubeck Festival, Special Collections has released a digital collection of materials from Brubeck’s 1958 State Department sponsored tour of Europe and Asia.

“Jazz Diplomacy: Dave Brubeck’s 1958 Tour of Europe and Asia” includes extensive photographs of the tour, newspaper clippings, concert programs, and audio files of Iola Brubeck reading the travel journal written by ten-year-old Darius Brubeck during the Poland and Turkey portions of the tour.

Islamic Scholar Featured in New Library Exhibit

Rom Landau: Scholar of the Islamic World is a new exhibit now available for viewing in the University main library. It chronicles Landau’s career at Pacific, as well as commemorates the 50th anniversary of Moroccan King Mohammed V’s visit to COP’s Institute of Asian Studies .

New Lobby Exhibit: Iola Brubeck

“A Script in Time: Iola Brubeck as Lyricist” uses materials from the Brubeck Collection to document the close relationship that jazz legend Dave Brubeck and his wife Iola have shared since they met on the Pacific campus in 1942. The exhibit traces their collaborative work from Iola’s management of Dave’s groups in the 1950s to her contributions as lyricist for Dave’s jazz and classical works.

The exhibit is located in the lobby on the main floor of the library.

Tour Special Collections during California Archives Month

In conjunction with California Archives Month, the library’s Holt-Atherton Special Collections department will offer tours of its facility this Friday, October 27. 30-minute tours will be given at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Come learn about and view the unique resources in Special Collections, including the John Muir and Dave Brubeck collections. Holt-Atherton is on the basement level of the main library.

Holt-Atherton’s Dave Brubeck Traveling Exhibit

University of the Pacific Holt-Atherton Special Collections has recently created a traveling exhibit about Dave Brubeck called “The Times of Dave Brubeck”. It explores the legendary musician’s jazz and classical music, his contributions to civil rights, and his participation in using jazz as a diplomatic tool in the 1950s and 1980s. There is a continuous loop of some of Brubeck’s most famous tunes and an opportunity for visitors to hear Dave explain aspects of his own music.
